Standard Sized Layers

I raise one specific Breed of full size, or "standard size" chicken called a Buff Orpington (Brown Egg).

I do often have Barred Plymouth Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, New Hampshire Reds and a few others here and there.  If you are looking for one of these breeds, email me and I will let you know if I have those specific breeds.

Buff Orpingtons are large yellow birds that lay a large brown egg.  They are excellent dual purpose birds, being great laying hens as well as large enough to be good meat birds.

Unlike most modern birds bred as layers the Buff Orpington will go broody and raise thier own young from time to time.

They are mild tempered birds and are easy to tame.  They make great pets for around the yard.

This guy is a young rooster but he is a great rooster.

In the late 1880s a man named William Cook developed a new
breed of chicken by crossing Langshans, Minorcas and Plymouth Rocks.

This breed of chicken was named "Orpington" after the place of its creation in Kent County, England.   Mr Cook bred this bird as a black chicken and it was not until later that the other color variants arose, Blue, Buff and White.

The Orpington was brought to the United States in the early 1890s.

There is also a bantam version of this bird created.   While smaller of course, the bantam maintained all the great qualities of this chicken.
